Marvel Movies definitively ranked – Top 21 Movies of the Marvel Universe

Scoopyowl ranks every MCU movie, from ‘Iron Man’ to ‘Captain Marvel’

With Avengers: Endgame hitting theaters soon, it’s time to answer the question that’s in everybody’s mind. Which Marvel Movie is best? Our team watched, assessed, cried and laughed at all 21 films that has been out since 2008.

Here’s every Marvel movie, ranked from worst to best. If you disagree we would love to see your comments in the section below:

21 – Iron Man 2 (2012)

Worldwide Box Office Collections $623mil, Domestic Box Office $312mil

Iron Man 2 performed quite well at the box office for a movie out in 2012. It out-grossed Iron Man on opening weekend and worldwide which only shows that the first movie wasn’t fluke.

This was Marvel’s first attempt at a film that would serve as a prelude to even bigger things to come farther down the road, and it was clear the studio hadn’t quite figured out what it was doing in that regard. It’s the only outright bad movie Marvel Studios has made.

While the 2008 Hit Iron Man ranks much higher in the Marvel universe, this frustratingly sequel rushed to establish the groundwork for an Avengers movie. Now when we think about it we can always appreciate the need to formally introduce War Machine, Black Widow, Nick Fury, and the idea of S.H.I.E.L.D. as the brainchild of Tony Stark’s dad. 20 – The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Worldwide Box Office Collections $263mil, Domestic Box Office $134mil

The only flop in the Marvel Universe is the “The Incredible Hulk”. When the movie came out Marvel didn’t quite know what it was yet, and it looks like the Hulk character didn’t really connect with audiences. The Hulk while he seems a fun character on paper is almost impossible to bring him to life. The Incredible Hulk is a watchable mediocrity compared to Ang Lee’s Hulk (2003). Though I have to agree that Edward Norton is livelier than Eric Bana. The way it seems now is that Hulk will not be getting his own movies but will only do cameos. Watch it now on Amazon here

19 – Thor: The Dark World (2013)

Thor 2 pic, thor 2 hd photos, thor part 2

Worldwide Box Office Collections $644mil, Domestic Box Office $206mil

Marvel’s “phase two” started off shakily, as the studio tried to follow up The Avengers with new solo films for Iron Man and Thor. Between the two, Thor: The Dark World suffers most for feeling like a completely generic Marvel movie and often bland.

Tom Hiddleston who plays the trickster Loki, which is always worth seeing. For that alone, it escapes the absolute lowest reaches of this list. Watch it now on Amazon here

18 – Thor (2011)

Thor (2011) image, Thor pic, hd photo

Worldwide Box Office Collections $449mil, Domestic Box Office $181mil

Thor actually marked a change of pace for Marvel, which had found success because of Iron Man by leaning into the story of Tony Stark. Thor is soberer, with director Kenneth Branagh loading up on poetic storytelling which was a surprise choice to direct the Movie full of special effects and action. Watch it now on Amazon here

17 – Iron Man 3 (2013)

Worldwide Box Office Collections $1.2 Billion, Domestic Box Office $409mil

Our team had doubts about where to rank this movie. Some of them ranked it relatively higher and most of them at the bottom. Rank 17 is just about right.

There are good reasons for both arguments. The part of the comedy about Tony Stark and the kid is so loose and freewheeling that Marvel has made till date. But the actual story is horribly bland, with a third act that struggles to tie everything together. Still Robert Downey is as good as he’s been playing this character. The movie was not disliked by audiences but it was greeted as an OK movie. Watch it now on Amazon here

16 – Ant-Man (2015)

Worldwide Box Office Collections $519mil, Domestic Box Office $180mil

Though Marvel fans’ enthusiasm has been muted for this one, director Peyton Reed’s romp through worlds both human- and insect-size proves to be a heck of a lot of fun. But lets face it, of all the comic book heroes available at Marvels disposal, Ant Man is the lamest. It doesn’t hurt that funnyman Paul Rudd plays the lead, or that the film ends with its best sequence, a big superhero battle that takes place entirely inside a little girl’s bedroom. Reminds me of Honey I Shrunk the kids. Watch it now on Amazon here

15 – Doctor Strange (2016)

Worldwide Box Office Collections $677mil, Domestic Box Office $232mil

Like Tony Stark, Stephen Strange is an imperfect playboy who suffers a humbling setback. But instead of turning to technology like Tony Stark, strange goes on a spiritual quest to the Far East, where he learns mystical secrets that give him the ability to do all sorts of neat magic tricks, from teleporting across continents to conjuring weapons with his mind. Tilda Swinton’s performance as the Ancient One is the on to watch out for. Watch it now on Amazon here

14 – Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

Worldwide Box Office Collections $622mil, Domestic Box Office $216mil

This movie is Fast and Funny. The sequel is a delightful comedy of scale, in which Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) returns as Ant-Man. The director Peyton Reed in this movie seems to have learned how to operate the heavy machinery of a Marvel movie yet keep it all light. Rudd’s performance has only gained in confidence and wit. 13 – Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Worldwide Box Office Collections $370mil, Domestic Box Office $176mil

The Marvel Comics universe dates back to the start of World War II. The setting is so historical that it’s it seems very exotic on the big screen. Chris Evans plays his role to the “T”. The acting by Chris is often compared to Christopher Reeve when we first saw him in Superman. Watch it now on Amazon here

12 – Captain Marvel (2019)

Worldwide Box Office Collections $456mil, Domestic Box Office $153mil

Captain Marvel, the first Female lead superhero to get her own movie in the Marvel Universe. She has a lot going for her in the movie with its excellent ’90s nostalgia, a great Nick Fury story, zippy supernova action sequences that truly capture the power and joy of Captain Marvel. Just dying to see a little more of what made Captain Marvel a comic book phenomenon. Watch it now on Amazon here

11 – Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Avengers Infinity War image

Worldwide Box Office Collections $2billion, Domestic Box Office $678mil

Avengers: Infinity War is so big it fails. Directors the Russo brothers had the impossible task of fusing all of the Marvel’s franchise heroes into one cohesive story in the third Avengers crossover film.

The result is a film that often feels more like it’s spinning plates than telling one complete narrative. Yet the result is a brashly entertaining jamboree, structured to show off each hero or heroine and give them just enough to do, At the same time, the film creates a sense that there’s something at stake and the urgency derives from the villain, Thanos, played by Josh Brolin. 10 – Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Worldwide Box Office Collections $853mil, Domestic Box Office $315mil

By far the best of the Thor movies. complete with several narrative detours that ultimately don’t go anywhere at all that which makes is an interesting watch funnily. This time around Director Taika Waititi makes sure the jokes are stronger, the action beats are mostly enjoyable, and the character work is occasionally stellar. Watch it now on Amazon here

9 – Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) pic, photos

Worldwide Box Office Collections $773mil, Domestic Box Office $333mil

Guardians was a cinematic challenge for Marvel as it had to make a fun movie which would attract an audience as the main characters is a Racoon and Brut. Well guess what it did and add to that was an encouraging performance from Chris Pratt the movie was a breath of fresh air in a poor summer season. The director, James Gunn, juggles it all successfully with the battles, the stunning effects, a story you actually cared about and well actually lots more. Watch it now on Amazon here

8 – Spider-man: Homecoming (2017)

Spider-man Homecoming images

Worldwide Box Office Collections $334mil, Domestic Box Office $880mil

“Homecoming” isn’t bad, it has an aggressively eagerness to the story telling and It keeps reminding the audience that the kid in the movie isn’t quite super but he’s just like you. Spider Man in my opinion should have been part of the Marvel Universe from the beginning and this being its 3rd reboot in the last 15years it really feels like a homecoming. 7 – Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Avengers Age of Ultron image

Worldwide Box Office Collections $1.4billion, Domestic Box Office $459mil

This movie is the ultimate example of a Marvel Studios saga that turns so much more into well so much less. It’s ostensibly a continuation of “The Avengers,” but Joss Whedon’s movie turns out colorful mess. The original Avengers just set the bar too high, but it was fun watching all the heros coming back together. Watch it now on Amazon here

6 – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 (2017)

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 image

Worldwide Box Office Collections $863mil, Domestic Box Office $389mil

This movie has too much color, energy and loads of humor. It’s a decent attempt at the follow up and you can actually see the movie is trying very hard to entertain you. It does a decent job at it and it will be always fun watching the gang back together. Watch it now on Amazon here

5 – Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Captain America Civil War pic

Worldwide Box Office Collections $1.1billion, Domestic Box Office $408mil

So the movie comes to life when a crazy guy discovers the key to unlocking the Winter Soldier’s programming, then the Avengers turn on one another and that’s where the action begins. The interpersonal conflict with the characters is where this movie does good. The only reason its on number 5. Watch it now on Amazon here

4 – Iron Man (2008)

Iron Man pic, Iron Man hd photos

Worldwide Box Office Collections $585mil, Domestic Box Office $318mil

Iron Man, the first movie in the franchise earns lots of points for just how different it was when it came out. It wasn’t based on a character everybody knew like Superman, Batman or even Toby’s Spider-Man. However, the good script and movie making opened the doors for a lot more creativity to be included in this massive franchise. Watch it now on Amazon here

3 – Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

Captain America The Winter Soldier image

Worldwide Box Office Collections $714mil, Domestic Box Office $259mil

This movie comes out to be deeply personal and the chemistry between Steve Rodgers and Black Widow actually carries this movie till the end. This movie reminds us on why we all like super hero based movies – Because it takes us out of this world and also at the same time makes us look at the world in an exposed angle. 2 – Black Panther (2018)

Black Panther pic, photos

Worldwide Box Office Collections $1.3billion, Domestic Box Office $700mil

To everybody’s surprise, Black Panther stole the show when he appeared in an action scene in Captain America: Civil War flexing his claws and always landing on his feet. This movie is super heroic and Ryan Coogler’s thrilling direction tells the seamless story about the African nation of Wakanda and its super heroic king, T’Challa. Watch it now on Amazon here

1 – The Avengers (2012)

Avengers HD pic, The Avengers photos

Worldwide Box Office Collections $1.15Billion, Domestic Box Office $623mil

The idea of sandwiching all of Marvel’s biggest heroes into one film should have been pure madness, but in the hands of director and writer Joss Whedon, it somehow paid off. This is the movie all comic book films aspire to be now — for better or worse. Its exciting to see Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and the Hulk come together after headlining their own films. The Expendables was the only other movie which had such an ensemble of cast power. Watch it now on Amazon here
